Designing takes just forever!  The actual drawing up of designs - that is the easy part.  Inking, laying out the work in a fashion that will service a utilitarian product - that is a whole different ballgame.  I love the process, but it is time-consuming and before one knows it, a year maybe more has passed, just because it is hard not to want to get it just right.  Well, maybe that is the perfectionist trait in me talking.

So this is where my designing takes place.  On a boring, old piece of any old scrap of paper.  Anything I can grab, just to get my ideas down, before they morph into something else.

There are days, like when I plan a particular colour within the design and it goes haywire!  In this case, I planned to use only the colours within my logo, so that the entire design range has good continuity. Then, the printer decides to have a spack-attack and gives me an entirely different colour.  This doesn't happen too often - thank goodness, but when it does, one is often placed in a predicament because the mistake - looks just great!

Then, I have to decide whether it is worth changing my entire range for the umpteen, hundredth time.

To the right of this planned emerald colour palette, my printer spat out this beautiful blue, inclusive of blue line art and not black and white.

I usually spend hours and lots of sleepless nights, exacting the ink process, within my design template.  There are times, when I have to change the template entirely, just to fit the design and that will mean going back to the InDesign layout and tweaking the measurements for hours on end.

Can you see what I mean?  It is really different.  I mean really different - but nice!

This all happened because I printed the piece on poster format - I had to test a new paper that was not big enough to take the entire design.  So, me being a diligent person as I am, I printed out the entire design in six parts, then stuck the design together, so I had an idea of what the design might look like.  My home printer will only output to A3 size and anything bigger than that requires me to be a bit ingenious, in finding a resolution.

So, long story short - I love the blue!  And I am left wondering whether or not I should include this colour in the design collection, also.  What say you?
