Where would we be without these kind, inspirational people? In a world where homelessness and poverty invades the lives of mankind as much as animals, Petstock - National Pet Adoption Day has brought together kind hearts, and happy smiles for our canine companions and feline friends. With the help of many generous hands, anonymous and named sponsors, donators, foster carers and giving business houses – these animals have avoided death row and have been given a second chance at life with new families who are as much grateful, happy and loving as the animals they have chosen to adopt. It takes a lot to open one’s heart and home to a perfect stranger and yet, the same can be said for animals, who must again open their hearts and blindly trust that their new adopting family will be both responsible and caring enough, to tend to their most basic needs.
This year’s event - supported by the generosity of Petstock, Toowoomba, who not only offers the venue, but pet supplies and veterinary assistance to both groups – make events such as these, which occur up to three times a year, all the more possible. ‘Off the Chain – K9 Rescue Qld’ saves death row, abandoned and unwanted dogs in Qld and NSW. They are a registered charity under the ACNC and desperately need caring people to make a difference – to adopt, foster, donate, volunteer and advocate for giving dogs and cats a second chance at life. Fortunately, twelve of the thirty dogs and cats in the Toowoomba region, have found new families. Caring people like Ben Pennington and Tiana Swain were tickle pink - having adopted a young, blue cattle dog. The adoption process involves paying an adoption fee, which covers flea and tick prevention, worming, desexing, micro-chipping, vaccination and even a weeks’ worth of food. However, with life-changing events such as these – it is not about getting a certain breed of dog. It is about saving a life. It’s about bringing together a family and an animal that can share a particular bond - a relationship that will endure the test of time. It is about getting the right fit for each party, one that will satisfy each other’s lifestyle, temperament, emotional and physical needs. ‘Angels Rescue’, directed by Carol Smell ensures just that and maintains a semi-permanent base within Petstock (on Anzac Avenue) for individuals to adopt unwanted cats in particular, and dogs. They too are a non-profit organisation and are dedicated to reducing the number of unwanted pets though placement, education, and spay/neuter assistance. Just like ‘Off the Chain – K9 Rescue Qld’, they need foster carers, volunteers, and supporters. If you are thinking of adopting a pet, rest assured each animal is examined by a veterinarian and are quarantined for at least two weeks. This ensures the new owner of receiving a healthy pet and allows pet professionals to assess the animal’s temperament, so that it can be placed in the most appropriate homes. Remember, days such as these can not function with out lots of wonderful people donating much more than their time - substantial animal products, medical expertise and advice, venue, animal care and treatment, animal fostering and housing, PR and advertising. And of course, the most important of all - kind, warm and generous hearts, without which these animals might not have survived their first night.
