Childhood

We forget - our childhood – Poo-bear, Thumbelina and Buzz Lightyear; forget the very ones who were there for us growing up.  Characters that stood by us through thick and thin – who never changed and were always there; either waiting in the shadows in a forgotten corner of the bedroom, or in an empty box under the stairwell or bed. 🦸‍♂️

Characters that lived and breathed substance into our being and gave meaning to our lives; that which helped us wade through every cragmire of life and taught us how to swim through the mud – to find clear waters just waiting for us, beyond our pool of tears.

They did not ask for anything; just waited patiently between the pages of a story; those wonderful living characters that leapt from the minds of authors – that found their way into our hands, heart and soul.  Characters that became so immortalized and treasured as an essential part of who we became, how we paused to dream and play with the elements of life.

Yet, somewhere along the way, we outgrew that imagination – stopped believing in the magic and miracles.  I cannot say the exact point in time when a person’s mind decides that dreaming is no longer worthy enough to hold, hope upon and to carry us off to distant lands and exciting escapades.
Because it is not the mind of a child that forgets – it is the demands and expectations of society that tell us to forget – tell us it is not real or that it is not the way dreams come to life.

Childhood gets taken from us and sadly, we become part of the system – a cog in the machine that expects every one of us to perform in suits, ties and stilettos – carrying a burden of papers we could not really care about, but we are told we have to… A system that expects us to forgo what made us who we are.

…A childhood that gets sold to the regiment of life; to the highest bidder, with the best wages and conditions.
And…nine times out of ten, we submit, become subservient to what a ‘normal’ life is supposed to look like.

Have you seen my childhood?
