Late last month, my arts editorial landed on something a little, bit different - still very much on the creative side, but in the industry of hair and beauty.
Toward the end of Ruthven Street, across the road from St Vinnies, I popped over to Ruthven Central, to grab a quick coffee. I wasn’t planning on staying long, but bumped into my niece – Kiara Hildebrand who has recently taken up a hair-dressing position with ENVY Hair. To be honest, I didn’t even know the place existed, but was pleasantly surprised to learn that Kiara was just loving it there.
ENVY Hair has been in the complex, for quite a while now.
It’s just I never end up on that side of town, feeling parched and on the corner of Long and Ruthven St. So, as I do, I listened to my inner, serendipitous self and found out all the wonderfully-creative things, my niece was up to...
I know Kiara as a somewhat timid, bundle of energy that has always loved lots of colour, who has a great passion to draw. For her, hairdressing was a natural fit and she’s been perfecting her art form, since she’s been fourteen.
So, why does she like hair dressing? “I love everything about it, to be honest! I love to cut a creative, artistic style and see the shape and form come together. Especially when you know, all your hard work is done on a colour and it’s taken you three hours to get to the end result – it’s just a beautiful finish.”
It is all about colour for you, I ask. “I prefer to work in cutting because there are so many different styles these days – there’s not just one style, not just plain, straight cuts – so many different shapes. Your concaves are never the same and no one’s hair is ever the same, either. You have to choose a different technique and style for every person that comes through the door. So for me, it’s a challenge for the day.”
Hearing that confession, we share a mutual smile - because a challenge, just happens to be the driving force for our entire family.
“I like ENVY because the people are kind to work with; caring to their staff, no one is ever a number – you’re actually a person and that counts. The atmosphere is amazing and if ever there’s something we are not too sure about, we can always confer with each other. There are days when colours come through, where you need a second opinion – it’s all about team work.”
In the eight years of hairdressing, Kiara’s certainly been busy and I know she’s not always been in the Toowoomba region. Our family have a habit of moving about, going to wherever the work takes us. This Toowoomba-grown hairstylist is no different.
“I did twelve months in Cairns.”
That’s quite a sea change. “Yeah, a bit,” she giggles.
Goodness! So what is the full service, I ask.
“We like to relax our clients with a massage. Their days are often so busy, getting their hair done is a speedy affair and they are all worked up. So, we give a special, stylist massage to help our clients relax and get the most out of visiting the salon. By the time we’re done, they walk out feeling refreshed and feeling like a brand new person.”
I notice, it’s not just about a massage. On the bench sits a chilled glass of wine, cheese and crackers. I thought wow-wee – that’s smack up in the morning. I’ll be set for the day!
Kiara breaks out in a voluptuous laugh. “Our clients especially love having a glass of wine after a hard day’s work – particularly on Thursday evenings.”
On the more serious side, I asked Kiara if she had any future plans, for her work.
“Yes, I’d love to enter a competition or two if I can, but that will depends on availability. I’d also like to attend a specialist, colour course with Redken. I believe they have a colour for everyone, given there are four different colour ranges. This gives clients a good selection of colours, for what they want done. Redken is a great conditioning, glossy colour that has great coverage and helps with the greys. We also use a product called Chromatics, which is oil-based rather than ammonia and SHADES EQ Gloss to protect the ends of the hair.
So there you have it, folks! If you are seriously thinking of a unique experience at the hairdressers - one that will turn you into a new man or woman and will leave you feeling as relax as can be... Do yourselves a favour and check out ENVY Hair!
Now where’s that wine bottle, Kiara...
