To be an 'artist', it is said that one lives a very solitaire and lonely existence. This may well be true, but to be an 'artist', one is consumed by colour, design and line. It finds its way into everything one does, says and sees. It is the breath behind a person's very existence, it is what brings happiness and pleasure to others, and what enables personality to be expressed, in the creation of form - be that a drawing in watercolour ~ a tale of words ~ a dip of ink that flows across one's page.
To be an artist, encompasses so many forms of expression - one often forgets that once you are 'an artist', your world is turned upside down. Everything is about discovering the world and how it exists.

To dance, one forgoes everything. One is consumed by the need to perfect every line and movement, placed on one's body. It is the need to create something so precious, fluid and lyrical that one becomes, yes...obsessed.
Obsessed with timing, rhythm, beauty, and the ability to push one's body far beyond the limits of what God intended. It is about delivering excellence by grueling and never-ending practice to the extent of injury, and then, a dancer rebuilds and does it all again. Because for a fleeting moment, in the attainment of perfection they are free. Free of the world that says, 'it is not possible, or you can't do that'. So, a dancer sets out to prove everybody wrong. They are patient, beyond measure. They suffer more than any athlete on the planet. They give more of their bodies to bring beauty to the world, while destroying their own. It is a fleeting career and yes, many will suffer as they age. But to deliver storybook dreams, on the feet of angels - every dancer wants that. |
