From the studio...the door's ajar

Every creative life begins in a place of reflection, questioning and a place of trying to understand how and why the world works.  

Most creatives are not contained to one medium, and this is shown by the myriads of half-finished sketches, tests and practices, half-written notes and almost finished works that lie scattered across a desk.  Of course one finishes things, but one experiments with tools, ideas, resources and with life... a lot.  One never seems to be done with learning; and one is quite comfortable absorbing life lessons...for it is ultimately the teacher of whatever comes into creative being. 

It is the discovery of wanting to know more about life and what makes it tick. 

This is always a curiosity for me.

Sometimes, there is a quiet corner of the room, where an idea has been waiting for months to find its way onto the page. It is often a big, huge pile of papers and half-worked ideas that could work ~ should be worked ~ is waiting to be worked ...into something miraculous. 

And sometimes it begins somewhere entirely unexpected — with a walk beneath the trees, along a riverbank where a passing thought surfaces and then, a character suddenly jumps into one's imagination, or just a few words that simply refuse to be forgotten.  In my case, they even get stuck on a wall with a big circle around them that says,

"Next great idea to flesh out!"

From the Studio is a glimpse into that place.

Here, the finished work will occasionally appear, but so will the beginnings—the drawings that are still taking shape, the stories still searching for their endings, the characters waiting to be discovered and the little observations that may one day...become something much larger. It is a place to share the process as well as the result, because creativity rarely arrives fully formed.

The studio behind The World of Sketa is always evolving. Books are being written, scripts being devised, illustrations are being imagined, new worlds are taking shape, and old ideas ...are sometimes returning with something new to say.

From time to time, the door will open and a little piece of that process will find its way here.
